The road section of the club centres on group rides that meet on Broad Street (outside the gates to Trinity College) at 9am every Saturday during term. These are led by committee members and there are always different groups going out for rides of varying length, speed and difficulty. There should always be a ride suitable for everyone. Routes are often published in advance in the weekly email newsletters and on the club Facebook page.
During the week, people often use the facebook page to organise rides and the squad regularly rides together as part of training. If you are ever lost for inspiration on places to ride around Oxford then the club’s Strava group is worth looking at, or try this catalogue of rides starting from central Oxford.
Even complete beginners should not be put off joining the club. We are keen to welcome riders of any ability (we were all new to it once) and support you with whatever it is you want to do on a bike. A significant proportion of our current riders rode their first bike races in OUCC kit, so if you want to give racing a try, we’ll get you there.
The OUCC Road Squad is the high performance cycling programme at Oxford University. The squad represents Oxford at the highest level of collegiate cycling in the UK. Each year, the squad’s objectives are to win the Varsity Match against Cambridge and to place as high as possible across all BUCS rankings. The squad also competes in local and national British Cycling races, as well as international events in Europe and beyond.
The squad is recruited and developed from both undergraduates and graduates at the University, spanning the breadth of cycling experience, courses and colleges. All members balance the commitments of training with the academic pressure of full time courses.
As a club we will support any rider who is prepared to put the work in. If you have ambitions of racing with us it is expected that you get a summer of solid training in before you join in Michaelmas, and endeavour to join the pre-season training camp, details of which can be found here. This is as much to prepare you for the commitment and dedication that will be required as it is to build your base fitness. The British Cycling website has some good advice to guide you through this.
We are an active group who target a number of races throughout the year, such as:
- OUCC Hill Climb – TBC (Michaelmas 2018)
- BUCS Hill Climb – TBC (Michaelmas 2018)
- Cuppers 10 mile TT – February/March 2019, Oxford
- BUCS 10 mile TT – April 2019, Oxford
- BUCS Team TT – April 2019, Bath
- BUCS 25 mile TT / Varsity against Cambridge – April 2019, Oxford
- BUCS Road Race –April/May 2019
- Local road races in May/June 2019, particularly those which make up the Oxfordshire Road Race League
as well as a selection of other races to be confirmed at a later date. Entry to many of these big races will require a rider to be selected, however those in bold are highlighted as races that are open to all and which we encourage everyone to enter (irrespective of their experience or ability).
We employ a British Cycling accredited coach to support everyone’s progression. Exact training plans will vary during the year but we anticipate it being something close to:
- Monday evening gym session
- Tuesday evening turbo session
- Wednesday 1430 group ride
- Saturday 0900 group ride
- Sunday 0900 group ride
with the addition of other individual training sessions on the road or turbo.
